How To Calculate Feng Shui Kua Number or Energy Number

Imagine you were born holding an invisible compass. Not one that points north, but one that points toward harmony. In Feng Shui, this compass is called your Kua Number. It tells you which directions nourish your energy, which directions drain it, and how to align your home, desk, and life to work with your personal energy instead of against it.

Your Kua Number is part of the Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) system, one of the oldest and most precise methods in classical Feng Shui. It divides people into two fundamental energy groups:

East Group – resonates with East, Southeast, North, South

West Group – resonates with West, Northwest, Southwest, Northeast

Knowing your Kua Number helps you choose the best directions for:

Sleeping

Working

Facing while making decisions

Placing your desk

Choosing your home orientation

It is Feng Shui made personal.

How to Calculate Your Kua Number

Your Kua Number is based on:  Your year of birth, Your gender,

Whether you were born before or after Feb 4 (Feng Shui solar year start)

Important: If your birthday is between Jan 1 and Feb 3, use the previous year.

Step-by-Step Calculation

Step 1: Take last two digits of your birth year

Example: 1979 → 7 + 9 = 16

Step 2: Reduce to single digit

16 → 1 + 6 = 7

Step 3: Apply gender formula

For Females:

Add 5 to result

7 + 5 = 12 → 1 + 2 = 3

Kua Number = 3

For Males:

Subtract result from 10

10 − 7 = 3

Kua Number = 3

Special cases

Male result = 5 → use Kua 2

Female result = 5 → use Kua 8

THE formula changeS after 2000

Because the Feng Shui flying star cycle moved into a new energetic sequence. The base number shifted from 10 to 9, altering the male formula.

For FEMALES born 2000 or later:

Add 6

Formula:
Single digit + 6

If result is two digits, reduce to single digit.

Example: Female born 2003
3 + 6 = 9
Kua = 9

Example: Female born 2019
1 + 6 = 7
Kua = 7

For MALES born 2000 or later:

Subtract from 9

Formula:
9 − single digit

Example: Male born 2003
9 − 3 = 6

Example: Male born 2019
9 − 1 = 8

Important Exception: Chinese Solar Year Rule

Kua number uses the Chinese solar year, not January 1.

The Feng Shui year starts around Feb 4 (Li Chun).

If born between:
Jan 1 – Feb 3

Use previous year instead.

Example:
Born Jan 20, 2003 → use 2002

Example Calculations

Female born Aug 14, 2004
0 + 4 = 4
4 + 6 = 10 → 1
Kua = 1

Male born Sept 2007
0 + 7 = 7
9 − 7 = 2

Why Your Kua Number Matters

Think of energy like wind and water moving around you. Your Kua Number tells you which way to face to catch the wind in your sails instead of against you.

When aligned properly, people often notice:

  • Better sleep

  • Improved opportunities

  • Clearer thinking

  • Less resistance in life

Feng Shui does not create luck. It removes friction so your natural luck can flow.
